Career Planning Timeline
While some Florida Community College students
plan to transfer to a university after graduation, others will
be prepared to enter the workforce immediately. Regardless of
which program of study youre in, you can start preparing for
your future career now. This timeline is a checklist of some of
the career planning activities you can do while attending Florida
Community College. While following these steps isnt mandatory,
they will help you keep your college career on track in order
to achieve your goal.
- Meet with your program manager or program
advisor to go over required coursework, TABE testing requirements
and job outlook information for the program youre considering.
- Become familiar with the resources and services
available to you in the Career Development Centers.
- Write a resume. We have resume preparation
assistance programs that can help. Then have it critiqued by
a CDC advisor. A resume critique now can help you determine
if there are gaps in your experience that you'll need to fill
before graduating.
- Consider a part-time job on campus related
to your program of study. Visit the Student Employment unit
located in the CDC and check out the job postings.
- Get involved on campus. A leadership role
in a club or student organization will contribute to your personal
development and help you build your resume. Visit the
Student Life and Leadership Development office on your campus to find out about
the opportunities available.
- Practice your interviewing skills. Contact
your Career Development Center for interviewing assistance programs.
- Begin seeking internship opportunities on
your own, with your program manager, with your programs internship
coordinator, and with assistance from the CDC. You should start
at least six to eight months prior to the semester that you
register for the internship credit class.
- Attend career fairs to network with employers.
- Get involved in professional organizations
to help you network with people working in your field and possible
connect you with future career opportunities. For example, the
Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce offers a student membership.
Contact a CDC advisor for more information.
- Research companies that youd like to work
for. Learn as much as you can about them.
- Participate in the Resume Referral Program
by registering with the
job matching system by College Central Network. There your
resume can be released to interested employers.
- Stay informed about on-campus recruitment
opportunities. Visit your campus CDC often for information.
- Select at least three to five references.
These are people who can talk to potential employers about your
skills and abilities. They should be people with whom youve
worked, not just friends or relatives.
- Consider building an electronic portfolio
to gain a competitive edge in the job market. Your CDC advisors
can help with this.
