LIT 2000 Advising Procedures

For several years prior to the 2003-2004 (20041) catalog, the Communications area of the Associate of Arts General Education Requirement (GER) included:

A. Six semester hours from the following:
   ENC 1101
   ENC 1102

B. Three semester hours from the following:
   ORI 2000
   SPC 2016
   SPC 2040
   SPC 2600

Beginning in 2003-2004 (20041) catalog, the Communications area still requires a minimum nine semester hours - but now three hours from each of the following categories:

A. Three semester hours:
   ENC 1101
B. Three semester hours:
   ENC 1102
   or
   LIT 2000
C. Three semester hours from any of the following:
   SPC 2016
   SPC 2040
   SPC 2600

Prior to 2003-2004 (20041), LIT 2000 was only an option for the Humanities B Area. As of 2003-2004 (20041) catalog, LIT 2000 is now an option for Communications Area B, but is no longer an option for the Humanities Area.

Students under Catalog Year prior to 2003-2004

If student did not complete ENC 1102 or LIT 2000 prior to Fall 2003 (20041),

  • Current students (from a catalog year prior to 2003-2004 (20041) can indicate whether they would like LIT 2000 to count toward Communications or Humanities.
  • If the student prefers that LIT 2000 will count towards Communications Area B, then any later completion of ENC 1102 would count as an elective course. This would be advisable if the student needed ENC 1102 for a major prerequisite for transfer.
  • If the student prefers that LIT 2000 count as Humanities B requirement, then that student will still need to complete ENC 1102 to fulfill Communications Area B.
  • Note: If the student has completed ENC 1102 and has fulfilled the Humanities requirement with other courses, then LIT 2000 would count as an elective course. This would be advisable if the student needed LIT 2000 for a major prerequisite for transfer.
If student completed LIT 2000, but not ENC 1102, prior to Fall 2003 (20041),
  • The course can only count towards Humanities because the course has been significantly modified during the course review process, effective Fall 2003.
  • Because LIT 2000 has always had a “Gordon” Rule requirement of 6000 words, if circumstances warrant, a student could request a course substitution for ENC 1102 through the standard method of completing a course substitution form with a counselor/adviser and then the appropriate dean.

Students under Catalog Year 2003-2004 (20041) or later

LIT 2000 will automatically fulfill Communications Area B requirement.

Graduation Note

Students will be graduated with satisfaction of AA General Education Requirements in place for the appropriate catalog year of the student. Exceptions to this can be satisfied with use of the attached form or course substitution process.
