Correctional Officer (5753)

Workforce Certificate

This program gives students a basic understanding of the duties and responsibilities of the line correctional officer. In addition, it gives the students an overview of the other related fields within the criminal justice system. Specific areas in which students will receive instruction include operational procedures, legal aspects of corrections, supervisory practices and related technical skills.

Expected Job Growth and Earnings

Jobs are expected to grow faster than the average; opportunities are expected to be excellent. Median annual salary for correctional officers in 2002 was $32,670.

Accreditation

This program is accredited by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.

Application Procedure

As part of the application process, students are required to take and pass the Corrections Officer Basic Abilities Test (COBAT), a driving history check, physical agility testing, drug screening, health physical, medical examination, polygraph, back ground investigations and oral interview. All students must have attained either a high school diploma or GED (certificates of completion are not acceptable.) Students must also be 19 years of age, have a valid driver’s license and be an American citizen. For more information call 904.713.4900.

Estimated cost of tuition is $975 (tuition rated for Florida residents, as of 7/06). Contact the program manager for additional costs (textbooks, materials, fees).
