FCCJ Institute of the South for Hospitality and Culinary Arts Frequently Asked Questions

Institute of the South for Hospitality and Culinary Arts

If I have my own knives and uniform must I buy a new uniform and knives?
Students are required to purchase the “culinary package” available in the North Campus Bookstore. The “culinary package” is a complete set of professional knives with case and chef’s uniform, which is required in all of the cooking classes. Any exceptions to purchasing these items must be approved by the chef instructor.

How much does the uniform and knife set cost?
The uniform (jacket, pants, hat, and apron) costs approximately $61. The knife set is approximately $215.

Why should I make an appointment to see the program manager for this program before scheduling my classes?
Because he will be able to inform you of the proper sequence of courses you need to take to complete your degree. This will prevent you from skipping a course and perhaps having to wait a year to take the only course you need to graduate.

Will I be a chef when I finish?
Upon completion of the culinary management degree program, the student will enter the workforce at the job level of cook. Students interested in becoming an American Culinary Federation (ACF) Certified Chef (C.C.) can find information on this certification by visiting the American Culinary Federation Web site.

Can I go part-time?
Yes, you may take a full load of four courses or only one.

If I’m working, do you offer evening classes?
|
Yes, we have evening classes every semester.

Is your program professionally accredited?
Yes, we have met the standards and are accredited to teach culinary arts management and hospitality management by the American Culinary Federation (ACF) and the Commission on Accreditation for Hospitality Management (CAHM). It also means that you have the assurance that the program content is current and top culinary/hospitality education professionals are your instructors.

How hard is it to get a job when I graduate?
The challenge you will have upon graduation is trying to decide which job you want. The job market for our graduates has more jobs than qualified applicants.

What can I expect my hourly rate or salary in the job market to be once I graduate?
Graduates of the program typically start out making $10 to $14 per hour and with overtime this averages out to about $25,000+ per year. Your salary level is often determined by your background experience, the needs of the employer and the company or operation’s pay scale for its various positions.
