Adult Basic Education (8555)

Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes are available to students, age 16 and older, whose TABE placement test are below ninth grade, indicating that they are not yet ready to be in the GED preparation classes and need more work on basic skills in reading, writing and/or mathematics. These classes are designed to provide a seamless progression of subject difficulty until the required grade level for high school completion programs is reached.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) (8500)

ESOL courses are non-credit classes designed for non-English speakers to improve their English, to help students follow their college courses taught in English, improve their chances for employment and live comfortably among other English speakers. The classes cover listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, work skills and life skills. Students take the CASAS placement test to determine which courses are right for them.

Citizenship preparation classes are also offered for those interested in becoming a naturalized citizen. Before registering for the citizenship class, students will be given an English language assessment.

High School Diploma (7517)

The Adult High School (AHS) program is designed for students, age 18 and older, who would like to obtain their high school diploma by completing all the credits needed to obtain a high school diploma required by the coursework and successful passing of the FCAT.

Which high school program is right for you?

Status A — 18 Years Old

Applicants 18 years and older will be admitted to the College’s high school completion program to seek an adult high school diploma by submitting the following:

  1. Completed membership application including social security number
  2. Proof of previous education: Applicants may transfer credits earned from grades nine through 12 and be placed into appropriate courses to meet the credit requirements for graduation. Official transcripts, grades earned and other documents can be submitted for specific course placement.
  3. Citizenship verification: Applicants must be citizens of the United States or resident aliens. If applicants are not U.S. citizens or resident aliens, FCCJ requires papers issued by the Immigration and Naturalization Service to determine eligibility for admission.

Status B — 18 Years Old

Students who will transfer credit to the high school in which they are enrolled must submit the following:

  1. A completed membership application including social security number
  2. Permission letter: A letter on letterhead stationery from the principal or counselor of the high school to which the student desires to transfer credit is required each time an applicant enrolls. The letter should indicate which course(s) are approved for transfer credit and the deadline for completion of the transfer credit.

Status C

Students who are already high school graduates but who need credit for a specific reason (e.g., seeking admission to the College’s nursing program but lack a chemistry credit) must submit the following:

  1. A completed membership application for admission including social security number
  2. Course fees: Students must pay fees for courses taken.

General Education Diploma (8515)

The General Education Diploma (GED) program is designed for students, age 16 and older, who would like to obtain their high school diploma by completing and passing the GED examination. Successful completion of the five-part GED test (reading, writing, social studies, science, and math) earns a certificate of General Educational Development.

Note: Official General Educational Development (GED) tests are not offered online. You must test at an official test center at your local school district or community college to earn a high school diploma.

GED QuickStart

This online course is for individuals who are academically prepared for the GED exam, but perhaps need a bit more assistance and/or study time in one or more of the subject areas. This is an excellent opportunity for students to connect with a GED instructor during their waiting time to complete the GED exam.

GED Connection Telecourse

This telecourse allows students to use the convenience of television to study for the GED Test. Students should view the telecourse airing schedule for cable viewing channels (Comcast and Time Warner) and times. Students who do not have access to the necessary cable television channels may view GED Connection on WJCT public television channel 7 every Saturday morning 6-7:30 a.m. A complete set of the 39 half-hour video lessons is also available for on-campus viewing in each of the FCCJ campus libraries. For more information about the GED Connection Telecourse, call 904.632.5065, e-mail gedontv@fccj.edu or visit Distance Learning’s GED Connection.

Vocational Preparatory Instruction (VPI)

This program helps improve academic skills for vocational training programs. VPI classes are open to students age 16 or older that scored lower on TABE test that are required for placement in a Florida Community College vocational training program. Students who need more work on basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics to help reach the academic level need for the vocational program chosen. VPI classes are FREE to students without a high school diploma or GED.

Dual enrollment or co-enrollment in college credit courses is also offered in the Polytechnic Academy to better prepare students for the workforce upon high school completion.

Polytechnic Academy (7530)

The Polytechnic Academy, operated at the Downtown Campus, provides students with the opportunity to earn a high school diploma while simultaneously completing vocational and college courses. Polytech prepares students for high skill, high wage employment through applied academics, mentoring and work experience opportunities. Special entrance eligibility requirements apply. Contact the campus program at 904.633.8478 for more information.
