Loan Process

1. How do I apply for a loan?
   
   The first way to apply is on line 26 on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Simply select either a number 2 (for student loans) or 3 (for student loans and work-study) on your FASFA application. This will automatically generate a loan application requirement as a required document.
   
   If the FASFA is already completed, you can request a loan at any time through your financial aid office. You can simply fill in the appropriate form (loan application or a supplemental loan form), making sure to select a lender and the amount you are requesting. The financial aid office will inform you of all other steps that are needed (the loan advising, loan workshop and MPN) and the process for completing these steps.
   
   To be eligible for a loan you must have a complete financial aid file at FCCJ. This includes completion of a FASFA form as well as completion of any institutional forms that are required. You can view these forms in Connections (Artemis).
   
   
2. How does my enrollment affect my loan?
   
   Federal loans require that you maintain a minimum of half time each term that you wish to receive a portion of your loan. Half time is at least six credit hours. If you drop, cancel or withdraw from a class that makes you less than six credit hours prior to your loan being disbursed, you will not be eligible for that loan.
   
   
3. How do I choose a lender?
   
   You can choose from the institution (FCCJ) lenders’ comparison chart (list is on the back of both the loan application and supplemental loan form) to ensure that your loan will be processed in a timely manner, or you can choose any outside lender that you may wish to use. FCCJ chooses lenders though a process where we ensure they are providing the best service for our students.
   
   
4. Why must I attend a loan workshop?
   
   The loan workshop is a service that FCCJ is providing at no cost to the student. Students that must attend the workshop are first time borrowers at FCCJ, students that are requesting additional loan funds and students that have excessive amounts already borrowed.
   
   
5. How do I complete loan entrance counseling?
   
   Visit the Nelnet Web site to complete your entrance counseling.
   
   
6. Can I apply for a loan if I am not earning a degree?
   
   No, you must be degree seeking in a program of study that is approved for financial aid.
   
   
7. What is the status of my student loan?
   
   Visit Connections (Artemis) “award summary” for complete details of your student loan.
