General Information and Services

Introduction

Florida Community College at Jacksonville (FCCJ) has four campus libraries, three center libraries and a centralized Library Technical Services (LTS).

A wide range of materials and services are provided by the library. These include many of the services listed in the Association of College and Research Libraries/Association for Educational Communication and Technology (ACRL/AECT) Standards for Community, Junior, and Technical College Learning Resources Programs.

The library maintains a collection of reference and circulating books, electronic database subscriptions, periodicals, microforms, and a variety of other multimedia materials, including computer programs. The Library of Congress classification system is used for the print collection.

Students, faculty members, and community users have access to a print collection of over 204,118 book titles, 310,408 book volumes, 3,247 periodical and newspaper titles, and an audiovisual collection of over 16,739 items. In addition, 1,108 e-book titles are also part of the FCCJ library collection. (Based on the latest annual report, July 11, 2006)

FCCJ is part of a statewide automated information system which connects the Florida community college library collections. Use of the computer based catalog allows access to the FCCJ collections, other library collections, electronic databases, and world wide information resources.

LTS performs the technical services of acquisition, cataloging, database maintenance, and processing. Campus librarians select materials to support their campus curriculum and overall College programs.

Intercampus and Interlibrary Loan

Intercampus loans can be arranged for materials located in another FCCJ Library's collection. You may either request desired item online or check with the staff at the Circulation Desk.

If you find no FCCJ collection owns the material you need, check with the staff at the Circulation Desk.

Arrangements can be made to borrow the materials from another library. Often materials can be available within a very short time.

Reference, Point-of-use Instruction and Information

Professional reference assistance and point-of-use instruction are available during the library hours of operation. Individual research assistance may be requested at the Reference Desks. Reference Desks are located within sight of the main entrances to each library.

Reference resources include materials in print format and electronic databases. Instruction in searching and retrieval procedures for CD-ROM and online databases is provided.

Reserve Collection

  • To Request Placement of Materials on Reserve

Faculty members may have materials placed on reserve. Reserve materials are circulated for a period less than the regular loan period. Arrangements should be made a minimum of three days in advance before releasing the reserve list to students.

  • Loan Period

Reserve materials are available for in-house use or may be checked-out according to instructor's directions.

Orientation Program and Bibliographic Instruction

Library instruction is provided in many formats, both for individual students and for groups. Presentations are often tailored to the subject area of the class. Faculty from all disciplines are encouraged to request customized bibliographic instruction or their classes. All libraries produce handbooks describing use of standard materials, and library services. Methods of instruction include lecture/demonstration, use of audiovisual materials, computerized adaptive instruction, and individualized instruction.

  • Guided Library Tour - request at the Circulation Desk.

  • Customized Bibliographic Instruction - discuss with librarians.

  • Library Courses - on-site and online library courses are offered at the present time.
