FCCJ Deerwood Center to offer Environmental Preservation lecture series
Experts engage students and community in discussions on local, global environment

The Deerwood Center at Florida Community College at Jacksonville is offering a five-session lecture and discussion series focusing on local and global environmental issues and their impact. The series will meet five evenings between Sept. 19 and Nov. 14, focusing on a different environmental matter each night. An expert on each subject will lead presentations and discussions. The FCCJ Environmental Preservation Lecture Series at Deerwood Center is a project of FCCJ English Professor Daniel Powell and his English Composition class, presented as a community service. The series includes the following presentations:

Sept. 19: Marsh Preservation Society — Learn why it is important to protect our wetlands, how to become involved and how to enjoy them to best advantage.

Oct. 3: Sierra Club of Northeast Florida — Urban planning, species conservation and living in harmony with the environment.

Oct. 17: Global Warming: Its Impact on Your Future — Environmental impact to economic impact, and much in between.

Oct. 24: St. Johns Riverkeeper — How do we limit our impact on Jacksonville’s keystone environmental resource?

Nov. 14: “An Inconvenient Truth” — Join an acclaimed, trained energy expert and recovering “oil addict” as he imparts information and visuals from the documentary in live, interactive commentary.

All lectures are free and open to the public; each begins at 7 p.m. at the Deerwood Center, 9911 Old Baymeadows Road, Room B-1204 (the “Academy”). For more information call 904.997.2757 or 904.997.2706.
