Emergency Preparedness for Persons with Disabilities: Free Conference July 13 at FCCJ, presented by Independent Living Resource Center

Independent Living Resource Center will present “Emergency Preparedness for Persons with Disabilities,” a free conference, on July 13 at the Florida Community College Advanced Technology Center (401 W. State Street, Jacksonville). Registration is from 8–8:45 a.m., followed by a welcome by Senator Steven R. Wise, a long-time advocate for persons with disabilities. A complete agenda appears below.

The day-long conference will teach persons with disabilities and their caregivers how to prepare for hurricanes, fire, flu pandemic and biological disasters. Topics to be covered in panel discussions and presentations include “Types of Disasters,” “Disaster Services,” “Hospital Response,” “Shelters — What to Expect” and “Personal Preparation.”

Lunch will be provided and attendees will receive an Emergency Disaster Kit. Early registration is recommended for this free conference, as attendance is limited to 200.

The conference is cosponsored by the City of Jacksonville, the American Red Cross, Sight and Sound Productions and FCCJ.

ILRC’s stated mission is “To empower all people with a disability (as defined in the American’s With Disabilities Act (ADA) or Rehab Act of 1973), to live independent and self-empowered lives.” To register or for more information call ILRC at 904.399.8484.
