DETAILS: Florida Community Colleges Cecil Center breaks ground for its first permanent facility,
with the goals of providing core educational offerings and programs tailored to the needs of Westside students and
employers.
Current offerings include general education, college preparatory, business and adult studies classes
to provide a firm foundation of college-level classes. Students can complete all requirements for an Associate in Arts
degree at the Cecil Center. Program and course offerings are designed to prepare students to pursue high-wage, high-demand
careers. Continuing Workforce Education assists with career enhancement and change. Alternative Teacher Certification and
Childcare Certification open doors to teaching and child care careers.
Ultimately, the Cecil Center will be a 130-acre campus, developed in progressive phases, physically as
well as academically. Phase I is a 44,000 square-foot building to replace the present modular buildings which opened in
2004. Completion of the Phase I facility is scheduled for 2007. The planned facility will provide technology-rich
classrooms and labs, a library, two auditoriums, a full-service student center and appropriate support facilities. In
addition, Phase I is designed to serve as a public shelter for hurricane protection. The budget for Phase I has been
approved at $13,125,277.
