This project is the first inter-collegiate
theatre event for Jacksonville. Though it is one of the
least frequently performed of Shakespeare’s plays, “The
Winter’s Tale” is considered by many to be
among the most beautiful. To the producers' knowledge,
this is the first production of “The Winter’s
Tale” in Jacksonville - a local
premiere almost 400 years after it was first performed
in 1611 at the Globe Theatre. The play defies categorization
since it contains equal parts of dark tragedy and lighthearted
comedy. “The Winter’s Tale” is an epic story encompassing
many of Shakespeare’s favorite subjects: betrayal, jealousy,
death, revenge and loss; and in the second half moving
toward romantic love, divine providence, forgiveness,
hope, reconciliation and resurrection.
