(From comments by the director):
Set in the Beverly Hills home of a Quentin Tarantino-style,
Oscar-winning movie director, “Popcorn” is
a satirical comedy thriller with the firing capacity
of a hit squad. “Popcorn” was originally
written as a novel in the mid-1990s in reaction to the
film “Natural Born Killers” being banned
in England. Some authorities feared the film inspired
a copycat murder, and could incite further criminal activity.
In the U.S., there were some of the same accusations
against Tarantino’s “Pulp
Fiction,” creating much debate among artists and
politicians. This debate continues. “Popcorn” theatrically
brings this debate to life. Elton’s adapted play
took London’s
West End by storm in 1997, and won the 1998 Laurence Olivier
Award for Best New Comedy and the Barclays Theatre Award
for Best New Play.
Please be advised this production contains
strong adult language, content and violence. It is not
recommended for audiences under age 17.
