Florida Community College and U.S. Army Signal Command and School garner statewide honors for workforce partnership
The U.S. Army and Florida Community
College at Jacksonville have been recognized as regional winners in the
second annual “Florida’s Best.” The award acknowledges their
partnership providing computer engineering technology training for soldiers.
Florida Community College at Jacksonville’s
Military Education Institute collaborated with its Advanced Technology
Center, the Florida Army National Guard and the U.S. Army Signal
Command and School at Fort Gordon, GA to develop and provide
computer engineering technology to soldiers. The training was
designed with online capability so that soldiers were able to
access instruction wherever they might be stationed. The result
is they may receive college credit for professional military
training, spend little time away from civilian jobs, and work
toward a college degree from anywhere.
Florida’s Best is a program of
the Department of Education and the Division of Community Colleges
and Workforce Education. It recognizes business and education
partnerships that create job opportunities for Florida citizens.
Winning partnerships include at least one education institution
(high school, vocational-technical school or community college)
and at least one business partner. The program is overseen by
a grant from the Division of Community Colleges and Workforce
Development. A statewide awards luncheon was held to honor the
19 winners on June 18.
