FCCJ classes teach skills and ideas to “do-it-yourself” homeowners

“Do-it-yourself” homeowners can save time and money with idea-filled home improvement courses offered by Florida Community College Continuing Education.

Interior Decorating: From Start to Finish meets January 20 – March 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the FCCJ Deerwood Center, 9911 Old Baymeadows Rd. Students will learn how to enhance any room and stay within budget. Topics include how to get started, color choices, wall coverings, flooring, window treatments, accessories, room arrangement and mixing old and new furniture styles. Tuition is $100.

Decorative Wall Finishes gives students the skills to create faux finish effects on walls, furniture and other surfaces using paints, glazes, stencils, design patterns and various application tools. Class is held at the FCCJ South Campus, 11901 Beach Blvd. on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $79 plus $15 for materials.

Wake Up Your Walls With Color uses a step-by-step approach for creating stone effects, aged looks, patterns and surface textures. Students learn which colors, paints, glazes and texture applications work best in a variety of decorative settings. Class meets Saturday, Feb. 21, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at FCCJ South Campus. Cost is $79 plus $15 materials fee.

Building Your Dream House, a comprehensive course on home construction, gives first-time homebuilders expert advice on how to budget time, money and resources when working with sub-contractors. Topics include: building codes; financing; home site preparations; materials and suppliers; flooring, siding, roofing, doors, and windows; plumbing, and electrical; wells and septic tanks; stairs, decks and fences. Class meets Thursdays, Jan. 22 – April 22, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at FCCJ South Campus, 11901 Beach Blvd. Cost is $295. Spouse may attend free of charge.
