More than $35,000 in scholarships to be awarded for attending College Goal Sunday
Parents and students get free help with federal financial aid forms (FAFSA) and a chance to win free money for college February 22
Students who attend College Goal Sunday on Feb. 22 have a chance to win valuable scholarships from a combined $38,000 contributed by University of North Florida, Jacksonville University, Edward Waters College and Florida Community College. College Goal Sunday (CGS) is an annual event in which students get free help in filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a necessary part of the financial aid process.
There are two CGS events in Duval and Nassau counties on Feb. 22, from noon-4 p.m., at two FCCJ locations. Students, prospective students, parents or guardians are invited. Attendees will be entered in a drawing for the chance to win thousands of dollars in scholarships.
Those in Duval County can attend CGS at the FCCJ Advanced Technology Center (ATC), 401 W. State St. (between Pearl and Broad streets). Those from Nassau County can attend CGS at the FCCJ Betty P. Cook Nassau Center, 76346 William Burgess Blvd. in Yulee, just east of I-95 off of SR A1A.
Former Jacksonville Sheriff and Education Ambassador Nat Glover will address attendees at the FCCJ ATC at noon. Professional financial aid staff and counselors will be on hand at both locations to offer free help in all aspects of the application process. In order to complete the FAFSA, parents and students should bring the following:
- Social Security number, driver’s license or alien registration card (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
- 2008 IRS 1040 or latest tax return and W-2 statements
- Untaxed yearly income statement for 2008, such as Social Security benefits, Temporary Assistance to Needy Students, welfare and non-educational veterans benefits
- Federal Student Aid PIN (Don’t have one? Sign up for one at Federal Student Aid PIN.)
Local cosponsors of the event are the public school systems of Duval and Nassau counties; University of North Florida, Edward Waters College, Jacksonville University and FCCJ. For more information or to RSVP visit College Goal Sunday.
