Cook Nassau Center beginning the week of October 12. The “Zora Neale Hurston: Genius of the South” non-credit class will examine the multifaceted talents of Zora Neale Hurston, a Renaissance woman: anthropologist, novelist, folklorist, short story writer, playwright, and feminist of the mid-twentieth century. Students will develop an understanding of place and history of a writer with North Florida roots. The instructor, Brenda Simmons, is the recently retired Dean of Instruction and Student Services at Florida State College at Jacksonville who wrote her doctoral dissertation on Hurston. The class will meet on Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to noon, beginning October 13 through November 17. The class costs $50.
“Speak to Me!” Oral Traditions Explored” will be taught by Diane Holt Johnson who has performed throughout Northeast Florida in a one-woman Harriet Tubman production which she wrote, performs with the Peck Ensemble, facilitates Diversity Study circles and has taught classes on the history of the Negro spiritual. The class will be a fun, interactive course where oral traditions are examined and explored to uncover their value and how they enhance our cultural and human relationships. The class will meet on Thursdays, 10 to 11:30 a.m., beginning October 15 through November 19. The class costs $50.
