Two Pathways Academy students advance to Poetry Slam state competition

Two students from Florida Community College’s charter school Pathways Academy are eligible to compete in the “Jobs for Florida’s Graduates” Poetry Slam state tournament in Tallahassee. Students Kourtney Armentrout and Mary Corby were judged the winners of the local competition held in February. They now advance to the state competition in Tallahassee March 31-April 2. The statewide competition is sponsored by Jobs for Florida Graduates. It will include competitors from the entire state of Florida.

Armentrout and Corby will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Tallahassee to compete in the state-level Poetry Slam. This is an opportunity for the students to network, showcase their talents, and observe the talents of others from around the state. While in Tallahassee Armentrout and Corby will also have the opportunity to be trained by some of the best performers in the country. Nationally known four-time Poetry Slam winner Taylor Mali will attend the state event.

A poetry slam is “the competitive art of performance poetry,” with dual emphasis on writing and performance. In a poetry slam, competitors present original poetry or prose and are judged according to set rules that may vary from slam to slam.
