Details: Dr. Connie Mulligan’s presentation “Tracing Our Prehistoric Ancestors the DNA Way—an Anthropological Adventure,” will explore how modern humans have colonized all corners of the globe. Using molecular biology techniques including DNA sequencing, Mulligan examines these colonizations, which range from the relatively recent migration across the once-frozen Bering Strait–15,000 years ago, to the migration out of Africa—between 50,000-100,000 years ago.
This lecture is FCCJ’s first in a year of worldwide celebrations recognizing the bicentennial of Charles Darwin’s birth on February 12, 1809. For a complete list of activities, visit Darwin Day Celebration. (North Campus will also host a lecture by Judith Johnson titled “Antibiotic Resistance – Are the Superbugs Winning?” on April 9.)
Mulligan earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University in 1990. She has an extensive history of fellowships and research positions from Yale, the Smithsonian Institution and the National Institutes of Health. In 2003 she became associate director of the University of Florida Genetics Institute. She is associate editor for “Molecular Biology and Evolution” and on the NSF Physical Anthropology Senior Grants Panel. She is also a mentor for UF Women’s Leadership Council Mentoring Program for undergraduate women.
