FACC Scholarship

FCCJ Chapter Awards the FACC Vivian Dellinger Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Vivian M. Dellinger (1942-1991)

Each year, the FCCJ Chapter of Florida Association of Community Colleges offers the FACC Vivian Dellinger Memorial Endowed Scholarship in memory of a well respected colleague and tireless advocate for FACC. A Professor of Math at the FCCJ Kent Campus from 1977 until her untimely death in 1991, Dellinger served the chapter in many capacities, including FACC Chapter President (1986), Chair of FACC’s Region II, and Chair of the statewide FACC Curriculum and Instruction Commission.

Professor Dellinger held a B.S. in Mathematics from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina (1965) and an M.Ed. in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg (1971). An innovative leader among faculty, she contributed significantly in her roles as Secretary of the Faculty Senate in 1980, Director of the Kent Campus Computer Laboratory in 1984 and Director of the FCCJ Instructional Network in 1985-86.

She was dedicated to the success of her students and consistently received excellent reviews from them. As co-chair for the First Coast Math Competition, Dellinger successfully organized and implemented the event, which drew approximately 600 secondary school students. During her last years at FCCJ, she coordinated the development of college prep studies exit tests and other curriculum development and revision projects for the math department, and she created study guides and outlines to help students pass the exit tests as well.

Vivian Dellinger’s husband, Dr. Harry Dellinger (1928-), was a Professor of Business at FCCJ’s Kent Campus until his retirement in 1997 and served as FACC President in 1985. Today, their daughter, Ruth Dellinger, is a Professor of Mathematics at Kent Campus and the family legacy continues.

In recognition of her many years of service and to honor Professor Dellinger’s memory, a scholarship was established in the FCCJ Foundation. Today, this scholarship is endowed and named the FACC Vivian Dellinger Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Each year, the FACC Chapter contributes funds to further build this endowment. To contribute to this scholarship fund, please call the Foundation Office at 904.632.3237.
