District Board of Trustees Meeting Presentation/Recognition of Sheryl Williams (June 2, 2009)
Sheryl is an outstanding example of one of the people who make FCCJ a success. She has an extraordinary sense of ownership in the Career Employees Council after having served 35 years, 12 years as President. She is a problem-solver, a vocal conscience, an advocate, and a spokesperson. She is able to see the big picture while also seeing the process problems. She clearly believes in addressing problems as they arise and continues to lobby for change if the problems haven't been resolved.
She has been the leader for adoption of many of the benefits Career employees enjoy today such as the 36-hour work week during the summer, educational opportunities, and Book Award program. She advocated for the development of the comprehensive employee recognition program, which included the Winning with Wellness program, the Excellence Awards, and establishment of the Professional Development Workshop tailored to the needs of the career employees. She felt very strongly about the recognition of inequalities between FCCJ’s full-time and part-time employees and adjusting as many as possible so that both employee groups enjoy the same benefits.
We have Sheryl to largely thank for the recognition of the Council’s role as an integral part of the management structure at FCCJ by inclusion of council members on College-wide committee’s and at official functions of the College. Sheryl’s retirement will take not only one of our outstanding career employee leaders but also a major part of the history of the Council and the College. We will miss Sheryl’s contributions and guidance but wish her well as she begins a new journey.
