Donald Green
Executive Vice President, Instruction and Student Services and Interim Open Campus President
Don Green began as an adjunct professor at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and at the University of Southern Mississippi. After teaching for 10 years, Don moved from Biloxi, Mississippi, to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for his first job as an academic dean at Kirkwood Community College. He moved in three years outside of Rochester, New York, to become vice president of academic affairs at Genesee Community College. He has taught at a number of both public and private colleges and universities.
Don has a B.S. and an M.A. in Sociology, an M.S.W. and a Ph.D. He continues to do research and publish in national journals and books.
Before entering the higher education environment, Don held many jobs throughout the nation and owned two businesses. He has lived in approximately 10 different states and throughout Europe; his last stay being in the Middle East where he served as a Malone Scholar for the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations.
In addition to Don’s heavy workload, he still finds time to participate in several organizations. He is on the executive board of the National Alliance of Community and Technical Colleges, Xerox International Higher Education Advisory Board, is a member of the National Military Intelligence Association and Past President of the Institute of Applied Technology for Construction Excellence.
Don has a 5th Dan Degree Black Belt and is the co-founder and Tang Soo-Do master instructor for Careers and Karate, a program based out of the College that provides a nurturing support system and discipline for inner-city youths who face broken homes and poverty. In May 2008, Don was featured in USA Weekend as a finalist for the “Most Caring Coach” award.
Leadership/Management Tip:
Remember that you are a role model and that all people see you through their very unique lenses. Learn to listen carefully to what is said and what is not said. Do your best to have those you work with understand your values and thought processes so that they can add their own creativity and still actively pursue the same goals.
