Sample Course Agenda

Facilitator Skills

Presenter: Joanna Scarboro

Program Description: The goal of this eight hour workshop is to train employees to be facilitators. Corporate success depends on a team being able to communicate and ultimately reach consensus on business issues ranging from new ideas to process change. The platform for team discussion is through meetings, and it is the facilitator who is tasked with the responsibility of achieving desired results from these meetings.

The first four hours of training will focus on the critical concepts of facilitation. The second four hours will deal with real case scenarios where each participant will practice facilitating group discussion.

The goal of the workshop is for each participant to learn and practice. By customizing the program to include real world cases, each participant will get to “road test” their learning in the work environment.

Course Objectives and Measurable Outcomes: Each participant will learn:

  • The role of the facilitator.
  • Group dynamics.
  • Critical facilitation skills including, but not limited to:
    • Running an effective meeting.
    • Establishing mutual respect and trust.
    • Effective probing.
    • Handling conflict.
    • Staying on task and on topic.
    • Managing agreement.
    • Achieving the desired outcomes
    • Record keeping.
    • Communicating outcomes to decision makers.
  • How to handle their own meeting through case scenario role play.

Practical Application Exercises:

  • Group work
  • Case scenarios
  • Role play

Student Workshop Evaluation/Assessment of Learning: An evaluation will be given to all participants regarding the training outcomes and specifically how they will apply them.
