Oct. 27-28, 2006

The FCCJ Stars went to the Rising Stars Showcase tournament in Davie, Florida and had a weekend of mixed results. The team came out very strong on Friday night defeating Florida Quicksilver 7-1 and the Tampa Mustangs 7-0. Pitchers Shannon Outman, Ashlyn Kimberly and Jana Owen combined to throw in both games and were very effective. Jessica Rockwell had two doubles versus the Quicksilver and Melissa Kretzman and Ashley Howard also had two hits apiece. Erin Johnson also doubled and walked in the contest. In the nightcap the three pitchers again combined to throw a 1 hitter while recording 7 strikeouts in 6 innings. Leading the offense was Angii Verbeelen who was 3 for 3 with a double, Ashley Newsome, 2-2 with a double, Kasey Fagan, 1-1, with two walks, and Erin Johnson, 1-2 with a double and a walk.

Saturday’s action got started late due to early morning rain and the Stars came out flat as well, falling behind to the strong NJ Inferno Gold team, 6-2. The bats came alive in the 5th inning as the team scored one run and had the bases loaded with no outs. The games were time-limited and the NJ coach went to the mound to talk to his defense for several minutes, ending the game; time expired as he walked off of the field. The Stars had their hot 3, 4 and 5 hitters coming to the plate but they didn’t have the opportunity to tie or win the game. In that game Meike Witteveen was two for three and Angii Verbeelen and Ashley Howard had doubles.

The next game was against the Alabama Thrillers who were hot, hitting 3 homeruns in the game as they defeated the Stars. In that game, Angii Verbeelen led off with a double and Meike Witteveen followed with a single to put runners on first and third with no outs but they were stranded there and that seemed to set the tone for the bats in that game. Jessica Rockwell doubled to lead off the fourth inning but that was the only other hit the Stars recorded in that game. In the final game of the tournament the Stars defeated the Ohio Ice in a 5 inning outing 3-2.

Again on Saturday all three pitchers appeared in each game. Outman gave up only one run in the tournament. Against the Ice, Kasey Fagan hit a massive homerun to centerfield and Melissa Kretzman and Angii Verbeelen singled and scored to lead the offense. Also recording hits in that game were Lianne Adkins, Erin Johnson, and Meike Witteveen. The team moves to 22-8 for the fall and concludes the season this Saturday at a tournament at Drew Park in Jacksonville. The team plays four games in a row starting at 9:00am.

JU had the bases loaded with one out in their half of the inning but Outman struck out the next two to preserve the victory. Rockwell moved to third on a wild pitch and pinch hitter Lianne Adkins drew a walk bringing Sam Barnes to the plate with one out. Barnes singled to end the game. Rockwell had two hits in the contest as did Melissa Kretzman. Pitchers Ashlyn Kimberly and Jana Owen held Chipola to 2 singles to lead the Stars. In the first, a 2–1 loss to Armstrong Atlantic University a late rally had the tying and winning runs on base when time ran out in the game. The ladies were never really in the game against Tallahassee CC and while they rallied to put up a good fight against UNF in the night cap some outstanding plays by the Ospreys held the Stars scoreless and UNF capitalized on a few mistakes by the Stars to score 4 runs.
