Philip L. Stitt has been appointed to coach the FCCJ Stars men’s basketball team starting with this season. Stitt was recruited from Winston-Salem State University (NC), where he was head basketball coach since 2002.

“We are very fortunate to have Coach Stitt come full circle to invest his skills back in the College and back in Jacksonville,” said FCCJ Athletic Director George Sanders. Stitt is a graduate of Terry Parker High School, a 1989 graduate of FCCJ and was assistant basketball coach at FCCJ for three years in the early 1990s. He has led his teams to numerous division and regional honors, including coaching two Mid-Florida Conference Championship Teams (1997 and 1998). He was named Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for 2004-2005.

Stitt had been with Winston-Salem State (an NCAA Division II team) since 1998, where he started as assistant men’s basketball coach. In May 2001 he began serving as interim head coach, being appointed to the head coach position in March 2002.

Prior to his appointments at Winston-Salem he was assistant coach at Fayetteville State University 1997-1998; assistant coach at Edward Waters College 1997; assistant coach at Jacksonville University 1994-1997; and assistant men’s basketball coach at Florida Community College at Jacksonville 1991-1994.

Education:

Bachelor of Arts degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from Brewton-Parker College in Mt. Vernon, GA.
