Project Renaissance

Tutoring Solutions Learning Community

The Math Solution

If you heard of a math program that changed a 40% success rate into a 74% success rate… Would you be interested?

The Vision...

  • Began with a 2003 visit to the AMATYC Conference in Salt Lake City at a session by Glendale Community College—“Methods to Retain at-Risk Students”.
  • In 2004, a group of north campus faculty made a site visit to Glendale’s math tutoring class.
  • Along with tutoring, the class included study skills, test-taking strategies, time management methods, handling math anxiety.
  • In 2005 Project Renaissance made a site visit to Glendale's campus.
  • In the summer of 2005, Donna Martin and Judy Holcomb began to organize the logistics of the pilot (course content, student tutor recruitment, material acquisition).

North Campus Pilot: Tutoring Solutions Learning Community

With the support of Jeff Hess and the backing of Project Renaissance a two credit hour course identified as SLS1932 was put into action for the Fall 2005 term, as part of a two term pilot.

Tutoring Solutions Learning Community

  • The students are concurrently enrolled in MAT0024 or MAT1033.
  • The class offers structured tutorial assistance in small groups.
  • Students work on math anxiety, study skills, note taking techniques, test-taking strategies, and time management.
  • The students use software that provides a prescriptive/diagnostic tool.
