Internship Program Competencies

A.S. Accounting Technology 2201

  • Understand basic Debit and Credit rules
  • Analyze business transactions
  • Journalize and post transactions to a general ledger
  • Prepare a trial balance
  • Understand deferrals/accruals
  • Journalize and post adjusting entries
  • Prepare the four basic financial statements
  • Journalize and post closing entries
  • Prepare a bank reconciliation and the necessary related journal entries
  • Post, maintain, and reconcile sub-ledgers for accounts receivable and accounts payable
  • Be capable of assisting in the taking of a year-end physical inventory, with costing the inventory using First-in; First-out (FIFO) or Last-in; First-out (LIFO), and computing Cost of Goods sold.
  • Be capable of maintaining a Fixed Asset Property Control ledger and assist in the accounting for and control of Property, Plant, and Equipment
  • Be capable of gathering the information needed to supply necessary Payroll information to an outside Payroll Service (like Paycheck) and record the necessary General Journal entries for the payroll from the information provided by the Payroll Service.
  • Be capable of interviewing an individual using a checklist and gather the needed information to prepare an individual Tax Return (Form 1040).
  • Maintain a Job-order costing system.
  • Solve Cost-Volume-Profit analysis
  • Compute and apply predetermined overhead application rates
  • Work with an Activity-Based-Costing (A-B-C) system
  • Prepare Operating budgets including a cash budget
  • Solve simple capital budgeting analysis using cash payback period, internal rate of return and net present value techniques
  • Analyze and offer solutions to simple relevant costing decisions i.e. accept or reject special orders, make or buy, scrap or rework and drop unprofitable segments

General Technical Skills/Competencies

  • Meet with clients along with their supervisor and will ask questions to understand the client’s attitudes about money, risk tolerance and goals
  • Collect pertinent financial information from the client on forms and through questions. This information will cover the client’s current income, investments and insurance along with data for a cash flow statement and balance sheet
  • Input the data and develop a financial planning software and use the software to help analyze the data and develop a financial plan
  • Work with their supervisor to analyze the results from the planning software, check assumptions and customize the plan for the client
  • Make any necessary changes in the plan, gathering more data if necessary and then print a plan and reports in a format suitable for presentation to the client
