Degree Alternatives
The Kent Campus Division of Workforce Development offers programs that prepare individuals for a career, for promotion in their current profession, or for transfer to a four-year institution.
Students have two degree alternatives, the associate in science (A.S.) or the associate in applied science (A.A.S.) degree. If you intend to pursue further education at the university level, you should enroll in the A.S. option. If you intend to go directly to work after completing your associate degree, consider the A.A.S. While the A.A.S. will not provide you with the articulation benefits of the A.S., it will provide you with the skills required to begin working in the field immediately upon graduation.
Associate in applied science programs are not designed to transfer to a four-year institution, but may articulate under special agreements between the college and the university system. For individuals wishing to spend less than two years in career preparation, college credit certificate programs are also available in several areas.
The program manager or chairperson with the approval of the dean of instruction may prescribe deficiency courses, which are necessary for successful completion of the associate in science degree. If students are veterans, a copy of the recommendation must be submitted to the Florida Community College veterans affairs office for certification completion.
With the approval of the dean of instruction, the program manager or associate dean may approve another elective or professional course not listed as an approved elective in the associate in science or associate in applied science degree curriculum, which will apply toward degree completion. If students are veterans, it is necessary that such course substitution be submitted to the veterans affairs office for certification completion. A record of the approval will be maintained in their file.
