Learning Center
College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Certification
Dear Student Tutor,
I want to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Kent Campus Learning Center. We are proud of the quality of instructional service that we offer students and we look forward to assisting you in your college goals and helping you to become a Master Tutor.
By virtue of your academic accomplishments, you have been chosen to be a peer student tutor in the Learning Center. You have a very important job that will give you the opportunity to help other students reach their goals and accomplish their dreams. If this sounds like a big responsibility, it is. However, at the same time, you have the chance to acquire real teaching and tutoring skills that are certainly worth mentioning on your résumé.
The Kent Learning Center has earned a certification by the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) for its Tutor Training Program. This certification by College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA), which is transferable to other institutions, enables the Learning Center to certify you on Regular, Advanced, or Master tutor levels. To this end, the Learning Center provides workshops and guided study using the text and video tutor resources on reserve in the Kent Library. You will also be asked to keep a record of your tutoring time and participate in a regular job evaluation by your supervisor. The tutor training workshops, (General and Supervisor) record keeping, evaluations, and participation toward the Regular level I of certification will be required of everyone. Tutors wishing to be certified on the Advanced (Level II) and Master (III) levels will need to fulfill additional requirements. See the attached check sheets for details on the three levels of certification.
I urge you to take full advantage of this opportunity by becoming highly skilled and earning the recognition of being a College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) certified tutor. This kind of training can be of enormous value to the conscientious participant, and the benefit of professional development far outweighs the time and effort required. These days almost all jobs require some sort of training responsibilities. Having this kind of certification on your résumé might just give you an edge when you are searching for a job. The Learning Center Coordinators and Manager encourage and support your professional development.
Sincerely,
David Hopcroft
